An IRS or tax fraud whistleblower is a person who tells the public about alleged illegal activities or misconduct in a government department or private company including those that commit tax fraud. If you are a whistleblower for tax fraud or other types of fraud where the government is being cheated, there is a fair chance that you may lose your job and might have trouble finding another. However, the Internal Revenue Agency (IRS) Whistleblower Office pays money to people who blow the whistle on persons who fail to pay taxes they owe. The IRS rewards whistleblowers up to 30 percent of the additional tax, penalty and other amounts they collect. For instance, in 2012 a banker at Swiss bank UBS was paid a share of $104 million for exposing the bank for helping tens of thousands of American citizens evade taxes. These types of incentives have resulted in a dramatic spike in fraud detection in the US. If you are aware of or know someone who works for a company involved in tax evasion or tax fraud, you are not alone and should consult a lawyer.
