ATTORNEY NEWSLETTER
A United States Senator recently announced his plans to create a whistleblower protection caucus in the United States Senate. He announced his plans on the 25th anniversary of the Whistleblower Protection Act. California whistleblower and securities attorneys are glad that the senator is so enthusiastic about the whistleblower protection.
The senator stated that he wants to create the caucus to build a coalition of senators who can assist him with bringing attention to the need for whistleblower protections. In the next few months, the senator will be collaborating with colleagues and encouraging them to join the caucus. He would like the new caucus to begin working together in the next congress. California whistleblower and securities attorneys would like to see the United States Senate take a leading role with whistleblower protection.
According to the senator, whistleblower protections are only worth anything if they’re enforced. He also stated that passing legislation is not the end of the process with whistleblower laws. Oversight by congress is a good way to ensure that whistleblower rights are respected. The senator also stated that he believed that a whistleblower caucus in the senate would send the message that congress expects whistleblower rights to be protected. The senator has been an advocate for whistleblowers for quite some time. He co-authored the Whistleblower Protection Act of 1989 and authored the 1986 update of the False Claims Act. California whistleblower and securities attorneys are glad that the senator is such a staunch supporter of whistleblower rights.
The government has recovered almost $40 billion of taxpayer money due to whistleblower laws. That money would have wound up with those who committed the fraud otherwise. In 2009, the senator and his allies worked to pass the Fraud Enforcement and Recovery Act. That law made the most substantial improvements to the False Claims Act since 1986. Additionally, criminal laws to prosecute mortgage fraud, complex financial crimes, and securities fraud were part of the 2009 act. In 2006 the senator authored the over haul of the IRS whistleblower program to combat tax fraud. He has been a supporter of whistleblower legislation for decades and should be applauded for his efforts.
