The Epidemic of Elder Abuse
Elder abuse is an epidemic in this country. Both financial and physical elder abuse climb at alarming rates each year. As baby boomers age, the numbers are likely to grow exponentially. We at Evans Law Firm Inc. have spent years combatting the financial exploitation of seniors and representing victims of financial and physical elder abuse and nursing home abuse. If you or someone you know has been a victim of financial elder abuse or physical elder abuse or nursing home abuse, call Evans Law Firm, Inc. today at 415-441-8669 and we may be able to help. We accept elder abuse cases in San Francisco and throughout California.
What to Do
Elder abuse comes in many shapes and sizes and from all sorts of directions. Sadly, elder abuse most often comes at the hands of those closest to the elder, both day to day caregivers and, saddest of all, family members. We at Evans Law Firm have experience representing elder abuse victims against every manner of perpetrator. We encourage you to report elder abuse of any kind to the authorities. Law enforcement will certainly assist the victim and family to the best of their ability but know that you should pursue all remedies all available to the victim. California law affords elder abuse victims trial preferences, extra damages, and attorneys’ fees and costs. Victims and their families should consult with counsel regarding all forms of redress; that is not the duty of law enforcement agencies.
Protecting Seniors
Isolation is the common denominator of most financial elder abuse cases. An isolated senior is a particularly vulnerable person and make easy prey for scammers, unscrupulous caregivers, sales agents and others. Stay involved in your senior’s everyday life and help him or her maintain a network of friends and loved ones who truly care and will keep in daily contact. If they suffer from any cognitive impairment, however mild, be extra-vigilant. Do background checks on caregivers. Make sure important papers, valuables, and credit cards and checks are in a safe place. Monitor the senior’s bank and credit card accounts for unusual activity. Remember to document everything. No list can ever cover everything but staying involved is the key.
