San Francisco and California Nursing Home Abuse Attorneys: Rape and Sexual Assault in Nursing Homes

ATTORNEY NEWSLETTER

Horrific Stories of Abuse, Assault and Rape of Nursing Home Residents

Stories of rape and sexual assault of nursing home residents are gruesome and nightmarish. But the reality is that nursing home residents are particularly vulnerable to rape and sexual assault from nursing home staff and from intruders. In one recently reported case, a man was charged with rape, elder abuse, and other felonies after he allegedly entered a nursing home and was allegedly found on top of an 88-year-old victim in her bed.[1]  Nursing home staff allegedly heard the victim and her roommates screaming and the intruder fled but was later apprehended according to the authorities.  How the intruder allegedly entered the nursing home is still under investigation but a police officer stated that the intruder may have entered through an unlocked door at around 3 AM on the night of the alleged assault.

The San Francisco and California nursing home abuse attorneys at Evans Law Firm, Inc. understand the extreme vulnerability of elderly nursing home residents to sexual abuse and other forms of elder abuse and neglect, abandonment, lack of supervision, or overmedication. We represent elderly victims of such abuse and our attorneys know how to investigate these cases and what remedies are available to the victims.  Our litigators will pursue all persons responsible for the injuries your loved one sustains. If you or someone you know is suffering from nursing home abuse here in San Francisco or elsewhere in California, call the nursing home abuse attorneys at Evans Law Firm today at 415-441-8669, and we can help.

There is little a family can do to prevent harm to loved ones in nursing homes from outside intruders at 3AM. However, always check a nursing home’s record for staffing, safety and cleanliness and review its inspection and citation records.  This information is available both at Medicare’s Nursing Home Compare website and at the State of California Department of Public Health’s website.  After you’ve done your research and selected a home, visit as often as you can, and look for signs of abuse or neglect:

  • Bedsores/pressure ulcers or other poor skin conditions;
  • Bruises and scratch marks;
  • Falls;
  • Indication of rape, sexual assault or battery;
  • Overmedication;
  • Elopement or wandering off;
  • Rapid weight loss;
  • Dehydration;
  • Abnormal or withdrawn behavior and unusual silence;
  • Prolonged sleep or drowsiness;
  • Agitation especially when certain caregivers are present;
  • Reluctance to speak when staff is nearby;
  • Unsanitary and unclean conditions;
  • Fear of being touched.

 You know your loved one best and may pick up on other indications of abuse or neglect.  If you do, act at once.  Report your suspicions to the authorities but also seek out counsel such as the nursing home abuse attorneys at Evans law Firm. Our lawyers will stand up for your loved one in court and get them the justice they deserve.  If you suspect any abuse, call us today at (415)441-8669.
