Horrific Stories of Abuse, Assault and Rape of Nursing Home Residents
Stories of rape and sexual assault of nursing home residents are gruesome and nightmarish. But the reality is that nursing home residents are particularly vulnerable to rape and sexual assault from nursing home staff and from intruders. In one recently reported case, a man was charged with rape, elder abuse, and other felonies after he allegedly entered a nursing home and was allegedly found on top of an 88-year-old victim in her bed.[1] Nursing home staff allegedly heard the victim and her roommates screaming and the intruder fled but was later apprehended according to the authorities. How the intruder allegedly entered the nursing home is still under investigation but a police officer stated that the intruder may have entered through an unlocked door at around 3 AM on the night of the alleged assault.

There is little a family can do to prevent harm to loved ones in nursing homes from outside intruders at 3AM. However, always check a nursing home’s record for staffing, safety and cleanliness and review its inspection and citation records. This information is available both at Medicare’s Nursing Home Compare website and at the State of California Department of Public Health’s website. After you’ve done your research and selected a home, visit as often as you can, and look for signs of abuse or neglect:
- Bedsores/pressure ulcers or other poor skin conditions;
- Bruises and scratch marks;
- Falls;
- Indication of rape, sexual assault or battery;
- Overmedication;
- Elopement or wandering off;
- Rapid weight loss;
- Dehydration;
- Abnormal or withdrawn behavior and unusual silence;
- Prolonged sleep or drowsiness;
- Agitation especially when certain caregivers are present;
- Reluctance to speak when staff is nearby;
- Unsanitary and unclean conditions;
- Fear of being touched.
