Nursing Home Residents Vulnerable to Financial Elder Abuse
Workers Target 97-year-old Nursing Home Resident
Elder physical abuse and neglect can be fatal to nursing home residents. But residents may also be victims of devastating financial elder abuse by unscrupulous nursing home workers. In a case reported just this week,[1] a group of nursing home workers took over $750,000 from a 97-year-old nursing home resident with dementia before law enforcement caught up with them. Authorities are investigating the case and may find more of the elderly victim’s money missing.

In the reported case, a group of five nursing home workers, including a nurse and a beautician on the staff, cashed large checks they conned the patient into writing and repeatedly used her ATM card for cash withdrawals. Sadly, the victim had no family. Her dementia and solitude made her an easy target for these criminals. The nursing home has promised tighter supervision of staff but that move is a little late for this victim. The elder abuse lawyers at our firm believe staff and administration should be held accountable for injuries to nursing home patients whatever the abuse.
