On March 8, 2013, Sacramento jury awarded the children of an elderly woman suffering from Alzheimer’s disease with $23 million after their mother suffered from physical elder abuse. The jury ordered that Emeritus Corp. pay punitive damages after acting with malice, oppression and fraud in its physically-abusive treatment to the 82-year-old woman. Joan Boice, the woman in subject, died just after three months of being placed in the Auburn assisted living facility. The woman’s children filed the wrongful death and elder abuse lawsuit.
