Caregiver Abuse: Yet Another Form of Elder Abuse
Elder Abuse
Currently, the largest generation ever in our country’s history is becoming senior“. Growing old brings big change in one’s life and as more and more of our population ages the changes – and adjustments – to aging become societal. Among the issue is the eventual need for care toward the end of life. Alarmingly, in recent years, elder abuse is also a haunting reality of later life. Whether financial, physical, sexual, or otherwise, elder abuse is a problem on the rise. About 1 in 10 elders experiences elder abuse, which amounts to a staggering 5 million individuals, and truly, no elder is perfectly safe. Caregiver Abuse
Sadly, caregivers can be the perpetrators of elder abuse, even in our own Marin County. Sometimes caregivers begin abusing the senior out of frustration or potential financial troubles. Taking $10 here and there from the senior may not seem like such a horrible crime. Yet, on a country-wide scale the number is huge: on average, elder abuse causes elders to lose a combined total of $36 billion per year. And of course the amount of money stolen can be much, much greater.
There are a variety of explanations for why elder abuse has turned into a national epidemic. Regardless of the explanation, the reality is that seniors are especially vulnerable to abuse from many quarters. And, naturally, caregivers, often with 24/7 contact with the senior, are in a position to exploit that vulnerability.
Prevention
, Elder Abuse takes many forms. Do all you can to keep yourself or your loved one safe from abuse. Never be afraid to check in on them as often as you feel comfortable doing so. Stay engaged in the senior’s life. Ask if you can help them monitor their finances to be sure that money is not disappearing. Also, be wary of new friendships or even new caregivers. Keep valuables under lock and key. Avoid isolation for the senior. Seek professional help if you have questions and get to know their treating physicians. Don’t hesitate to ask questions. Don’t lose touch!
