Amador County is named after José María Amador, a soldier, rancher and miner who, in 1848, established a successful gold mining camp near the town of Amador City with several Native Americans. In Spanish, the word amador means “one who loves.” Amador is also known for its vineyards. Nearly 600 acres of the county’s vines are at least 60 years old, with many vineyards dating back to the 19th century. The area is known for its rich history and rich reds.
