Inyo County
Inyo County, sometimes known as “The Other Side of California,” sits on the eastern edge of the state bordering Nevada. With a population of only about 18,000, Inyo County is one of the smallest counties by population in the state. The county’s primary claim to fame is that it is home to a large portion of Death Valley National Park. The legendary national park is one of the most extreme landscapes on earth and is the hottest, driest, and lowest national park in the United States. Contrary to its name, however, the park is not completely inhospitable. Tourists flock to it from far and wide to see its spectacular scenery, including mountains, deserts, and Joshua trees. Inyo County is also home to Mount Whitney, the tallest mountain in the contiguous 48 United States. Experienced hikers treasure Mount Whitney for its dramatic peak and exceptionally challenging yet rewarding climbs.
