On Tuesday, November 10th, eight people have been charged by the FBI for abusing California’s workers insurance compensation system. They are medical providers accused of receiving bribes and kickbacks in exchange for providing treatments to injured workers even though it was not necessary.
This insurance fraud abuses the compensation system. The victims are the people and the workers of California, everyone it concerns. Moreover, the injured workers did not receive the best medical advice in their treatment. There was a conflict of interest between their recovery and the benefits that medical providers could get through bribes and kickbacks scheme.
It is essential that medical providers are not influenced by the money their profession attracts. While doctors tend to be highly paid, it is an important part of their profession, expressed most potently in the Hipporactic oath, that they are not to be swayed when it comes to the standard of care they provide. To intentionally compromisethat oath, as in this case, is a tragedy.
