Seniors whose mobility is limited require adequate care to prevent pressure ulcers, commonly known as bedsores. Over 2.5 million people suffer from bedsores each year in the United States. Preventing bedsores is easy. However, adequate care is necessary and failure to take such case may constitute physical elder abuse.
Recently, two nurses filed a lawsuit in Illinois against Momence Meadows Nursing Center for providing inadequate health care to patients. The plaintiffs were fired after they complained to their supervisors about the facility’s spare staff and supplies. The plaintiffs complained that the facility’s inadequate care caused patients to suffer excessive bedsores, infections, skin disorders, deprivation of proper medications and other abuses. In the end, the jury awarded approximately $28.11 million in damages.
