The Food and Drug Administration recalled two powerful acid concentrates in March of 2012. Both products, GranuFlo, a powder-based concentrate, and Naturalyte, a liquid-based concentrate, were sold to numerous dialysis centers nationwide. Medical directors and physicals anonymously reported “troubling findings” associated with both concentrates’ dosing measurements in November of 2011, but it wasn’t until March 2012 that Fresenius Medical Care warned other dialysis centers of the potential risks of the products.
The products are both used to be mixed with hemodialysis machines (also known as dialyzers) to neutralize acid in the blood of patients who suffer from acute and chronic renal failure. However, various usage of the product appeared to increase patient’s likelihood of suffering from cardiac arrest and death during dialysis treatments, says a Fresenius memo. These products cause heightened levels of bicarbonate which result in patient’s being six times more likely to experience cardiovascular events such as cardiopulmonary arrests, metabolic alkalosis, low blood pressure, stroke, or even death.
