ATTORNEY NEWSLETTER
Statistics reflect that 1 in every 7 senior citizens will fall victim to elder abuse. Unfortunately, elder abuse attorneys note, that very often it’s a family member or close family friend that is the abuser. In fact many victims of elder abuse refuse to report it because of this very reason. Many elderly abuse victims feel scared, isolated, or may even financially depend on their abuser.
Physical abuse is the most common amongst the elderly community. This can include but is not limited to: beatings, poor nutrition, poor sanitation conditions, and lack of medical treatments or necessary medications. But many abuse attorneys remind us that elderly abuse is not only physical, it can also be financial and mental. Although financial and mental abuse may be harder to spot this does not make it less prevalent. Signs of financial abuse can include but are not limited to: large withdrawals, signatures on checks or important documents that do not resembling the senior’s signature, and large contribution to organizations or charities that could be fraudulent. Mental abuse is perhaps the hardest of the three to spot, due to the lack of physical evidence. Yet mental abuse can include but is not limited to: intimidation tactics such as yelling, blaming, ridiculing, humiliating, and even isolation from friends and family.
Attorneys advise people to speak up if they suspect or see any patterns of abuse. Children and the elderly community are the most vulnerable within society and therefore should be protected.
