A new California Bill aims to provide respectful care for LBGT senior citizens. Assembly Bill 663 passed the legislature with a vote of 26-11. The bill was authored by Assembly member Jimmy Gomez and was sponsored by Equality California. San Francisco elder abuse attorneys say that this bill will help LGBT senior citizens.
Assembly Bill 663 will is intended to ensure that LGBT senior citizens get competent and respectful care at residential care facilities. The bill aims to ensure competent care for LGBT seniors by integrating cultural competency instruction into the training received by employees at residential care facilities. Specifically, the training is mandated for residential care facilities managers. San Francisco elder abuse attorneys remind the public that all senior citizens deserve to be treated with respect.
According to the Equality California executive director, LGBT senior citizens are among the most vulnerable in our society and now we are one step closer to providing some protection for them. LGBT senior citizens were pioneers and should be able to live out their final years in dignity, not face discrimination that many of them fought so hard to overcome. Across the United States there are an estimated 1.5 million LGBT senior citizens; and that number is projected to double by 2030. This generation of LGBT senior citizens is the first to live their lives with the impact of HIV/AIDS on their health. With the passing of this bill, cultural competency training will be part of the normal curriculum for residential care administrators; and that should have an impact on the quality of care provided to LGBT senior citizens in residential facilities. San Francisco elder abuse attorneys think that this bill should help to curb discrimination against the senior citizen LGBT population residing in assisted living facilities.
A senior assembly member stated that the passing of this bill was a true partnership between Assembly member Gomez, Equality California, and the California Senior Legislature. Equality California is a statewide lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender advocacy organization in California.
