Following Up On CNN Report of Nursing Home Abuse
What’s Being Done?
We at Evans Law Firm wrote before on the recent, terrible CNN story about nursing home abuse. To recall, CNN last month reported on cases of sexual abuse in nursing homes occurring throughout the country at an alarming rate. The story sent shock waves of the extent and depravity of crimes against the elderly. CNN revealed that more than 1,000 nursing homes around the U.S. had been cited for mishandling suspected cases of sexual abuse. We join many others in asking will anything be done about it?
Nursing Home Response
After the story broke, the National Association of Health Care Assistants pledged to take action. And many state legislatures, including California’s, did the same. Family members of the assaulted seniors and elderly advocates called for increased monitoring, additional protections for nursing home patients, easier reporting protocols, and higher scrutiny of reported incidences. Unfortunately, Congress seems headed the other way. In a bill introduced by an Iowa Congressman, nursing homes would be immunized from liability. Sponsors of the bill say it’s aimed at cutting costs.
California Elder Abuse Laws
Fortunately, California takes the lead in protecting seniors from financial and physical elder abuse. We expect the State of California to continue to do so regardless of the federal response. That is good news for California seniors and their loved ones. We at Evans Law Firm support the rights of all of our seniors and vow to do our part in battling the horror of nursing home abuse.
