Family Members Acting as Caregivers
When a loved one begins to reach the stage in life where they need daily care, family members often step in to help. Many family members do not see themselves as caretakers. They think of it as more of a family obligation. Family members acting as caregivers often receive little to no professional help. Family members spend about 20% of their income caring for their family. The AARP recently reported that family members spend around half a trillion dollars annually caring for their family members. Medicaid reports around $469 billion annually and Medicare reports $498 billion annually as the economic cost of family caregiver services.
What You Can Do to Help
Because family members are not official caretakers, they are not represented by any organization such as a union or interest group and often do not have an united say in laws or policy decision making. Some steps to alleviate this issue would be: Recognizing the demands of family caretakers and to recognize the decrease in official care takers and to seize the opportunity to engage in decision making. The California Task Force on Family Caregiving is one place where family member caregivers can find out more information on getting involved.
