California Elder Abuse Attorney: Check In With Seniors This Holiday

ATTORNEY NEWSLETTER

Remember Senior Loved Ones and Friends On The Fourth

Holidays Always Important Times To Check In With Elderly Friends and Loved Ones

Happy Fourth of July! Holidays are made for good times with family and friends and we at Evans Law Firm wish you a happy and safe Fourth of July. We hope you spend time with loved ones and friends this summer holiday.  We especially hope you’ll include any senior loved ones in your holiday. We represent a lot of seniors in our practice and see too often the harmful consequences when they’re isolated or forgotten.

An isolated older person is particularly susceptible to financial abuse and fraud. We have seen caregivers, insurance agents, financial advisors, retirement planners, contractors, agents under Powers of Attorney and others financially abuse lonely seniors here in San Francisco and throughout California.  We represent the victims of any financial elder abuse and pursue all available remedies against persons or businesses responsible for the harm.  California law provides additional damages and remedies for senior victims, including awards of attorneys’ fees and costs incurred in bringing an elder abuse case in certain circumstances.  If you or a loved one has been the victim of financial elder abuse or other forms of elder abuse call us today at (415)441-8669 and we can help.

Here are some tips on preventing elder abuse that come to mind this holiday:

First and foremost, stay involved in your beloved senior’s life. Check in unannounced, keep an eye on their belongings and money, know who’s coming and going, call frequently and always speak directly to your loved one.  Don’t let someone else keep them from the phone. Never ever allow a senior to grant a Power of Attorney to a caregiver.  If your loved one needs help you cannot provide, do background checks on anyone you hire to help them and stop by as often as you can when caregivers are on the scene.  Monitor the senior’s bank accounts and credit cards and make sure their valuables are safely stored away.  Attend any meeting about financial matters you elderly loved one may have with anyone else.  Encourage old friends and other family members to check in too and encourage your loved one to stay active in social and support groups and their church or synagogue. The more support surrounding a senior, the more protected they are from abusers.  If you suspect abuse, act at once. We encourage you to report any elder abuse to the authorities.  But also pursue all remedies afforded seniors by California law.
