Reaching Out To Seniors
Time For One On Ones With Older Loved Ones
Don’t Let Older Loved Ones Isolate
Happy Labor Day 2022! We at Evans Law Firm, Inc. represent seniors and their families against people who prey on older persons for financial gain or who neglect or abuse them in care settings whether at home or in a facility. Older persons living by themselves at home may be the most vulnerable to abuse. Isolated older persons are particularly susceptible to financial abuse because they do not have anyone assisting them with finances or helping them go over their statements and records for problems. That’s why we ask you on this day and really always to stay involved in older loved one’s lives and help them as they most likely helped (or raised) you when you were younger. If you sense someone may be abusing them financially or exploiting their age or declining sharpness, call us. We represent senior victims of financial or physical abuse or neglect whether in their own homes or in a nursing home or assisted care facility. If you or a loved one has been the victim of any form of elder abuse call us today at (415)441-8669 and we can help. Our toll-free number is 1-888-50EVANS (888-503-8267).
Studies indicate that approximately one in 10 Americans aged 60+ have experienced some form of elder abuse. Some estimates range as high as five million elders who are abused each year. One study estimated that only one in 24 cases of abuse are reported to authorities. O the real numbers on elder abuse are probably much higher than reported figures. According to the U.S. Department of Justice, 20-40 percent of elder abuse cases involved financial exploitation. The annual loss by victims of financial abuse is estimated to be at least $36.5 billion. Potential abusers include caregivers, insurance agents, financial advisors or retirement planners, trustees, stockbrokers, contractors, new “friends” or girlfriends or boyfriends, second spouses or other family members, and strangers.
Important Tips For Protecting Older Loved Ones
First and foremost, stay involved in your beloved senior’s life. If you don’t live nearby, call frequently and always speak directly to your loved one. Don’t let someone else keep them from the phone. Never ever allow a senior to grant a Power of Attorney to a caregiver. Monitor the senior’s bank accounts and credit cards and make sure their valuables are safely stored away. Closely review all their monthly statements. Encourage old friends to check in too and encourage your loved one to stay active in social groups and their church or synagogue. The more support surrounding a senior, the more protected they are from abusers. If you can’t see your older loved one on Labor Day, be sure and give them a call to let them know you’re thinking of them!
