Caregivers and Physical and Financial Elder Abuse
Extreme Abuse and Neglect
Caregiver abuse of the elderly can be so shocking that it’s hard to believe anyone is capable of so much cruelty toward a dependent senior. In a recent California criminal case[1] of physical elder abuse by an attorney who acted as his wife’s caregiver, law enforcement discovered an elderly victim lying in her bed, emaciated and severely dehydrated, with her body fused to the bed sheets. The Alameda County and California elder abuse attorneys at Evans Law Firm, Inc. represent seniors victimized by devastating physical and financial elder abuse by caregivers and others. If you or someone you know is a victim of elder abuse in Alameda County or elsewhere in California, call us today at 415-441-8669, and we can help.
The victim told authorities she had not been out of the bed or bathed for two years. An emergency room doctor who treated the victim testified in trial that it was the worst case of elder abuse and neglect he had seen in his 30 years of practice. The abuser was sentenced to two years in state prison for his crimes. At sentencing the defendant was in denial of his conduct and showed no remorse. Incredibly, the victim survived the abuse and can now begin to heal. In response to the abuser’s sentence, the local Assistant District Attorney who prosecuted the case stated, “The victim showed incredible strength and resolve throughout this entire case. We are pleased that justice was justly served and that she can now begin the healing process.”
Report suspicions of elder abuse to the police and Adult Protective Services immediately and call qualified elder abuse counsel. While official reporting is important, you should pursue all civil remedies available to senior victims under California elder abuse laws. Our lawyers handle elder abuse cases of all varieties and know the remedies and extra damages to which you and your victimized loved one are entitled. Bringing a timely civil action against abusers can secure justice for an injured senior. California courts award attorneys’ fees to victimized seniors in certain cases and this can ease the burden of bringing a suit.
